They’re safe to use with everything, they look pretty, and they just feel good in the hands, you know? But over time, wooden items begin to lose their “glow” a bit. In the past, I’ve used food safe mineral oil, but I ran out and I didn’t want to pay a ridiculous price for it. Plus, it just never seemed to last very long, and it always took more than I thought it would. So I did some research and decided to make my own “wood butter.” Its seriously easy to make, and requires only two ingredients. I happened to have those around the house, but they are really easy to get online or at the store. And since everything is food safe, you can use a regular pan to make it. I’m lazy, so I have a pan I was getting rid of that I decided would be dedicated to things like lip balm and this butter, so I wasn’t worried about clean up. I’ve done a video where I take a cutting board I got at the DAV thrift shop and it really made a HUGE difference. I did sand this one – it was WAY too rough not to – but even so, I’m kind of shocked at just how big a difference it made! The Recipe You really only need a few things. 2 oz of beeswax (I’d recommend pastilles, or grating it from a block) 8 oz of fractionated coconut oil A saucepan, an empty jar, and a spoon. You are going to dump your beeswax and coconut oil together, and then melt them together over low/medium-low heat until its completely liquid. Once it is, you pour it into whatever container you want to keep it in. Let it cool, then use! I’d recommend rubbing in a dime or nickel size amount (It doesn’t take much) and then letting everything sit for 8-12 hours. Then use a soft, lint free cloth and buff it out. I use the flour sack towels from Wal-Mart for this. No lint. I’m planning to make a huge batch of this come November, put it with a nice wooden spoon, or a cutting board, and using it as Christmas gifts. It would also make a good gift for any time of year for your favorite foodie, or a hostess gift!
