U.S.%20%235053%202016%2049%26cent%3B%20US%20Flag%20(APU%20coil)%20First-Class%20Mail%20Forever%20%26nbsp%3B%20Many%20American%20schoolchildren%20have%20heard%20the%20story%20of%20how%20B%20Ross%20sewed%20the%20first%20United%20States%20flag.%26nbsp%3B%20But%20they%20may%20not%20have%20heard%20the%20controversy%20that%20surrounds%20that%20story.%20%26nbsp%3B%20The%20tale%20of%20B%20Ross%20was%20generally%20unknown%20prior%20to%201870.%26nbsp%3B%20That%20was%20when%20William%20Canby%20first%20told%20the%20Pennsylvania%20Historical%20Society%20of%20his%20grandmother%26rsquo%3Bs%20place%20in%20our%20flag%26rsquo%3Bs%20creation.%20%26nbsp%3B%20According%20to%20Canby%2C%20back%20in%201776%2C%20General%20George%20Washington%20came%20to%20Ross%26rsquo%3B%20upholstery%20shop%20to%20commission%20a%20flag%20based%20on%20a%20rough%20design.%26nbsp%3B%20Ross%20made%20some%20adjustments%20and%20sewed%20the%20original%20Stars%20and%20Stripes.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20was%20this%20flag%20that%20was%20presented%20to%20Congress%20and%20confirmed%20as%20the%20nation%26rsquo%3Bs%20emblem.%20%26nbsp%3B%20With%20no%20actual%20records%20and%20nothing%20but%20hearsay%20to%20go%20on%2C%20Canby%20was%20largely%20disbelieved.%26nbsp%3B%20But%20by%201873%2C%20his%20story%20was%20running%20in%20Harper%26rsquo%3Bs%20Weekly.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20audience%20grew%20significantly%2C%20as%20did%20belief.%20%26nbsp%3B%20Other%20descendants%20of%20B%20Ross%20have%20continued%20the%20legend%2C%20and%20even%20embellished%20a%20little.%26nbsp%3B%20And%20supporters%20are%20always%20looking%20for%20historical%20evidence%20to%20prove%20the%20story.%26nbsp%3B%20But%20today%20it%20is%20often%20dismissed%20as%20a%20myth%20or%20considered%20a%20fable.%20%26nbsp%3B%20Whether%20the%20B%20Ross%20story%20has%20any%20truth%20to%20it%20may%20never%20be%20known%20for%20sure.%26nbsp%3B%20But%20it%20will%20forever%20be%20part%20of%20our%20nation%26rsquo%3Bs%20history%2C%20even%20if%20only%20as%20folklore.%20%26nbsp%3B%20Value%3A%26nbsp%3B%20First-Class%20Mail%20Rate%20Issued%3A%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3BJanuary%2029%2C%202016%20First%20Day%20City%3A%26nbsp%3B%20Washington%2C%20D.C.%20Type%20of%20Stamp%3A%26nbsp%3B%20Definitive%20Printed%20by%3A%26nbsp%3B%20Ashton%20Potter%20Method%3A%26nbsp%3B%20Offset%2C%20Microprint%20in%20Coils%20of%20100%20Self-Adhesive%20Quantity%20Printed%3A%26nbsp%3B%201%2C000%2C000%2C000%20%26nbsp%3B%20The%20American%20Flag%20has%20been%20a%20popular%20stamp%20subject%20for%20many%20years.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20design%20of%20the%202016%2049%26cent%3B%20US%20Flag%20stamp%20comes%20from%20a%20photograph%20taken%20by%20Emmanuel%20Faure.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20bright%20red%20of%20the%20flag%20stands%20out%20against%20the%20muted%20blue%20of%20the%20sky%20and%20makes%20the%20whole%20image%20pop.%26nbsp%3B
